30 July 2020 Current Affairs:The Union Cabinet led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the National Education Policy 2020 on 29 July. The main objective of the policy is to make way transformational reforms large scale, in both school & higher education sectors. It is the first education policy of the 21st century. 

National Education Policy 2020:
♦ National Education Policy 2020 will replace the 34-year-old National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986.  
♦ The new policy is built on Equity, Access, Quality, Affordability, and Accountability. The policy is in alignment with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. 
♦ It also aims to transform India into a knowledge society and global knowledge superpower by making both school and college education more holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, suited to 21st century needs and aimed at bringing out the unique capabilities of each student.

Important Highlights:
♦ The main objective of the new Policy is for Universalization of Education from pre-school to secondary level with 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in school education by 2030.
♦ NEP 2020 is expected to bring 2 crore out of school children back into the main stream.
♦ The policy includes new 5+3+3+4 school curriculum with 3 years of Anganwadi/ Pre-schooling and 12 years of schooling
♦ It emphasis on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, extracurricular, no rigid separation between academic streams, and vocational streams in schools
♦ Under the policy, Vocational Education will start from 6th Class  with Internships
Teaching upto at least 5th Grade to be in mother tongue and regional language
♦ Assessment reforms to track the progress of  Student to achieve Learning Outcomes
♦ GER in higher education will be raised to 50% by 2035. Also, 3.5 crore seats is to be added in higher education
♦ Higher Education curriculum to have Flexibility of Subjects
♦ Multiple Entry / Exit to be allowed with appropriate certification
Academic Bank of Credits to be established to facilitate  Transfer of Credits
♦ Under the new policy, the National Research Foundation (NRF) will establish a strong research culture
♦ Affiliation System will be phased out with graded autonomy to colleges in 15 years NEP 2020 advocates increased use of technology with equity; National Educational Technology Forum to be created
♦ NEP 2020 emphasizes setting up of Gender Inclusion Fund, Special Education Zones for disadvantaged regions and groups
♦ New Policy promotes Multilingualism in both schools and HEs; National Institute for Pali, Persian and Prakrit, Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation to be set up.
